North Coast Trail - British Columbia (Map)
The 60 km North Coast and Cape Scott trail at the northern tip of Vancouver Island is the newest addition to the wilderness coastal hikes available in British Columbia. Hard work by dedicated volunteer trail breakers and construction crews resulted in this newest hiking gem being accessible to backpackers in 2008.
Cape Scott has been a destination hike for many years for those looking to enjoy solitude on spectacular white sandy beaches and dunes. Cape Scott's scattered relics presents a look back in time to First Nations use, a Danish settlement, and a military radar base during WWII. The North Coast Trail with its temperate old growth rainforest and pebble and sand beaches, links with the existing 16 kilometer Cape Scott Trail, to offer hikers an exceptional coastal wilderness experience.
Besides the beautiful beaches and old growth forest, are lowland bogs and meadows, tidal pools, sea stacks, sea caves and the many interesting rock formations. Wildlife is plentiful as well, with sea birds, otters, sea lions, gray whales, black bears, wolves and even the occasional cougar.
Note: This hike is extremely challenging and should only be attempted by experienced hikers or individuals who are extremely fit and can carry 20 kg/40 lbs. and more.
